Antique French La Lorraine Green Glass Jars | Pair | Thistle Motif | Early to Mid 20th Century
This pair of antique French La Lorraine glass jars bring a pop of color to any kitchen. This set is rare with their unique top clasp style. You'll see that each one is embossed with the iconic La Lorraine name across the body, with a thistle motif beneath. The thistle is the heraldic emblem of the Lorraine region, which many people do not realize when seeing this style of antique storage bottle.
This set is likely early 20th century due to the bouchon mécanique or simple wire-tension closure that you'd see on early 20th century French commercial product jars. This is a different closure than the lever bail you see on standard green glass French home canning jars. This style points to these having been produced as commercial product jars (preserved fruit or vegetables perhaps) rather than empty preserving jars for the kitchen.
The bottles are pressed mould glass, each holding 3/4 litre as embossed on the base. You can see fine air bubbles caught in the green glass and a soft tonal variation between the two. The glass lids carry the same thistle relief making them beautiful from any angle.
These antique French preserve jars look at home on an open kitchen shelf, lined up with other green glass, or set out holding dried lavender from the Provencal hillsides. A pair like this, both bottles intact with their original lids and tension wires, is a welcome addition to any Provencal glass collection.
