Antique French Poêlon | Vallauris Glazed Terracotta | Early 20th Century
What I like about this antique French poêlon (cooking pan) is that there is no mystery about what it was made to do. It was built for cooking on the fire. Cooks from this time period would use a wooden stick that was placed in the hollow handle to move the terracotta pan around the coals to control the temperature.
The impressed Société Industrielle de Vallauris mark places it in one of the great pottery centers of southern France, from the early 20th century. These pans were factory made and then put straight to work in family kitchens.
I love the colors on this antique cooking pan. The exterior is in a warm, ochre glaze while the interior shifts toward a deeper red-orange. It's a combination that feels unmistakably Mediterranean.
Turn it over and the story gets even better. The underside is darkened from years over the coals... it's the kind of history that makes this pottery so amazing.
If you close your eyes, you can imagine it simmering a daube (Provençal beef stew), warming olives, or holding a simple tomato sauce on the edge of the stove. Today it looks great styled on a kitchen counter holding fruit, stacked with other pottery on a farmhouse table or displayed on a shelf.
The fire marks underneath are my favorite part. They remind me that this was never created to be decorative... It just became that way by being useful.
