Antique French Stoneware Oil Jug | Grès with Ochre Glaze | Early 19th Century
This French grès (clay) oil jug has the kind of surface that draws people in. The bare stoneware, deep fired tones and poured ochre glaze give it a strong, earthy presence, while the low spout and side handles keep the jug tied to real kitchen use.
Known as a pot à huile, or oil pot, this piece likely dates from the early 19th century. It was hand thrown in stoneware, with two loop handles at the shoulder and a short pouring spout set low on the body for a controlled pour.
The ochre glaze was poured over the spout side and allowed to run naturally across the belly, while the rest of the body shows mottled fire marks, mineral streaking and age from long use. A strap handle once bridged the top and was lost long ago, with the old break now fully settled into the life of the piece.
Displayed on a console, shelf or kitchen surface with old wood, linen or other pottery, it brings the quiet history of an early French working vessel into the room. This is the kind of object that does not feel styled. It feels inherited.
