Vintage French Bakery Collection | Tinned Steel | Mid 20th C.
What I like about this collection is that it was clearly assembled through use rather than by a collector. Eighteen vintage French baking molds, gathered over years of service and still carrying the same warm patina that ties them together today.
The group includes a classic fluted brioche mold, a rectangular cake pan, a large patterned baking tray, eight larger and two smaller tartlet molds, and six boat-shaped barquette molds. Several pieces retain the Gaufrex maker's stamp, a French manufacturer established in 1947, placing the collection firmly in the mid-20th century.
Each mold was made for a specific purpose. The brioche mold carries the deep petal fluting that gives the loaf its distinctive shape. The tartlet molds were built for individual fruit tarts and pastry shells, while the barquettes were designed for the elongated pastries that still fill French bakery windows today. The larger tray and cake pan are embossed with decorative floral motifs pressed directly into the metal. Over decades of use, the original tin finish has mellowed into a soft pewter tone across the entire ensemble. It just feels good to have this set in the kitchen for some reason.
Maybe you can picture these tinned steel forms spread across a bakery worktable before a busy weekend, each mold waiting for its turn. That is what is so appealing. They still feel like tools and can be used today to turn out delicious desserts in your own kitchen.
The set looks fantastic staged on a countertop, on a shelf next to your collection of cookbooks or occasionally pressed back into service. Each piece has the atmosphere of a French pâtisserie... and individually they are charming. But it is the collection that makes it special.
