This antique French terracotta storage jar was made for daily use in a working kitchen... and it shows in every detail. The piece is a substantial pot a graisse (fat or preserve storage jar) likely produced in the South of France in the 19th century. It carries the classic two handled silhouette of regional French pottery, scaled up well beyond a standard confit pot.
The body is hand thrown in coarse terracotta with a beautifully aged exterior, showing the soft tonal variation that only generations of use can produce. The interior carries a yellow ochre glaze that wraps just over the rolled rim, sealing the inside for whatever the household chose to keep in it. Two hand pulled loop handles sit at the shoulder, applied by the potter and softened by use.
