The green is deep, glossy and full of movement, shifting from bright garden green along the rim to a deep emerald at the center. Filled with lemons, figs or clementines... it brings that unmistakable South of France warmth into the room.
This antique Vallauris pottery bowl likely dates from the early 20th century and is marked underneath for Foucard-Jourdan. This was a "long-running" pottery workshop in Vallauris in the Alpes-Maritimes. The workshop was known for hand-shaped earthenware and this rich green glaze, often described as camaïeu de vert, or tonal green.
The bowl is generous and hand made, with a softly scalloped rim that waves slightly where the potter shaped it by hand. The bowl has that weight that you expect from old terracotta.
What I like most is how alive the glaze feels. It is not one flat green. It changes as you turn the bowl in your hands. That depth gives the bowl so much personality.
Today, it would be beautiful on a farmhouse table, sideboard, kitchen counter or shelf. Use it for fruit, onions, or as a working every day salad bowl. After all, it is a bowl first, but the color makes it something special.
