The cork is what makes this antique French walnut oil jar feel especially personal. It is still seated in the neck, exactly where it belonged, turning the whole piece from a beautiful old vessel into something that feels much closer to the household that used it.
This jarre à huile de noix, or walnut oil jar, was hand thrown in terracotta and likely comes from central France, consistent with Auvergne country pottery of the late 19th century. The rounded body rises to a short collared neck, with a pouring spout with a strap handle and two applied lugs where a suspension strap may have been used to elevate the jug.
The honey-brown glaze was dipped over the shoulder and allowed to run naturally down the bare terracotta body below. The surface shows mineral deposits, glaze loss, age marks and an old plaster repair at the base, all part of its long working life. Displayed with dried branches, set on a dresser or left standing on its own, it has the steady presence of something useful, kept and valued for generations.
