Antique French Cutting Board | Wood with Iron Handle | c.1890–1920
This antique French cutting board has a wonderfully simple shape, but the iron handle is what gives it its personality. It is a practical detail, but also a beautiful one. You can imagine this board being lifted from a table, carried back from the sink, or hung at the end of the day in a French kitchen where everything had its place.
This planche à découper ancienne (old cutting board) likely dates from around 1890 to 1920, consistent with French country kitchen boards of the period. It is made from a substantial rectangular plank of wood with a hand-forged iron handle fitted to one end. No maker’s mark is visible, which is exactly what you would expect from a working kitchen piece of this kind.
The face of the board carries the marks of long use. Dense crosshatch knife scoring runs across the surface, with worn edges, darker areas in the grain and a few small age fissures at the ends. These are the details that give old French cutting boards their warmth. They were not made to sit untouched. They were made to be part of daily life.
The iron handle adds a slightly more utilitarian feeling than the shaped wooden-handled boards, and that is part of the appeal. It gives the piece a clean, practical line and makes it easy to hang on a wall with other antique French boards. It nice to see the different shapes, woods and handles of various antique French cutting boards building that collected farmhouse feeling.
It could also sit on the counter for serving bread, cheese, or something simple before dinner. The dark wood contrasts so nicely with antique copper and linen torchon as well. Pairs perfectly with a period specific butchers knife as well!
