Antique French Bread Board | Hand Carved Beech | Provincial Farmhouse
This antique French bread board, or planche à pain ancienne, was never tucked away for special occasions. It sat where it could be reached, used, cleaned, and used again. Cut from a single thick plank of beech, it has the kind of confidence that only comes from doing one job well for a very long time. The form and age of the wood place this likely in the late 19th to early 20th century.
The construction is beautiful and simple. Shaped from one piece of wood, the working face has knife scoring running in every direction. The beech has aged into a warm honey tone, and where the patina thins you can still see the characteristic flecks in the grain. Near the lower edge, a small knot carries a small crack, the sort of thing that happens when wood spends a century adapting to changing seasons.
This board has all of its history on display. It was most likely used daily as a cutting board, bread board and utility board. Lean this one against a backsplash, hang it from a peg, or use it exactly as intended beneath a loaf of bread, a wedge of Comté, and a good knife. Welcome, Provence.
