Antique English Pudding Steamer | Grimwade Quick Cooker | c.1911
This antique English pudding steamer was made for one job, and it shows. The Grimwade Quick Cooker is a small ironstone bowl with a fitted lid and a hollow funnel rising from the center of the bowl. Steam travels up through the funnel and cooks the pudding from the inside out while water in the saucepan does the same from below. It's a wonderful design.
The whole piece is printed in green transfer with cooking instructions, the patent numbers, and the words Gold Medal London 1911. Made by Grimwade Brothers at Winton Pottery in Stoke-on-Trent, the firm that later became Royal Winton.
The lid is what makes this antique ironstone pudding bowl such a wonderful piece of history. The top carries the full set of cooking instructions, the approximate one-pint capacity, and the 5½-inch size designation. That matters because it was the smallest Quick Cooker offered in the Grimwade catalogue, considerably harder to find today than the larger family-size examples that turn up more regularly.
Flip the lid over and you find a printed catalogue of other Grimwade patent products: the Hygienic Household Jars, the Pie Dish, the Safety Milk Bowl, and the Grimwade Jug, each illustrated and described. They built the advertising right into the finish... another brilliant tactic.
The interior glaze remains clean and bright, the green transfer is still crisp, and the central funnel is in good working order. There is a small chip to the rim of the lid, consistent with a piece that has spent more than a century in working kitchens.
Whether displayed on a shelf or pressed back into service for a traditional Christmas pudding, it remains one of those wonderfully inventive pieces of early kitchen history that makes people stop and look twice.
