Antique French Terrine | Mustard Ochre Glaze | Late 19th to Early 20th Century
This antique French terrine carries the unmistakable warmth and charm of provincial country pottery. The oval form, domed lid with molded floral rosette, and applied side handles are all consistent with production from the Vendeuvre faïenceries in the Aube region and similar French workshops of the late 19th to early 20th century.
Finished in a rich mustard ochre glaze, the piece has the earthy palette so closely associated with traditional French farmhouse kitchens.
The terrine is formed in hand thrown earthenware. The lid is especially appealing, with its molded sunflower style motif radiating outward from the central knop. Small chips along the rim, scattered firing flecks, and natural craquelure across the glaze all contribute to the authenticity and lived character of this terrine à pâté (pâté terrine).
Originally intended for storing country pâtés, rillettes, and preserved foods, this French terrine still feels perfectly suited to a working kitchen today.
Whether used functionally, displayed alongside antique copper and stoneware, or placed on open shelving where the ochre glaze can catch the light, it brings an effortless sense of rural French atmosphere into the home. A beautiful addition for collectors drawn to old French pottery, warm patina, and pieces that quietly tell their story through use and age.
