Antique French Gargoulette | Green Glazed Earthenware Water Jug | Late 19th to Early 20th Century
An amazing example of the classic antique French gargoulette... a water jug that was produced in a Provencal village workshop and never left the South of France. On this water pitcher, the upper half was most likely dipped in the original copper green glaze. The lower half is left as raw terracotta, the way these were always made.
But the green glaze tells more of the story. Often times the glaze fell off from hard use in the fields or from the pitcher freezing in the winter. This jug looks as if it was well used and has endured many winters since the 1800's.
This antique earthenware cruche carried water out to the fields and back to the kitchen for generations. The partial green glaze on the upper body sealed it against leaks. The unglazed lower body kept the water cool through evaporation. Now this Provencal water jug is ready to bring that quiet, rural energy of southern France into your home.
