These Spanish green glass demijohns do not just sit in a room. They change the light in it. The three tones of green, from pale bottle glass to deeper teal, give the set a layered look that feels collected, architectural and quietly luxurious.
Also known as dame-jeannes or bonbonnes, these hand-blown bottles were made for storage and transport, then gathered in the South of France through the brocante trade. Two carry a diamond V.D.O. mark, while the deeper teal bottle is marked B.S.A. Barcelona with a patent number.
The handmade character is easy to see in the seed bubbles, uneven bases, rolled collars and slight movement in the glass. One rim has an old chip, and the interiors show mineral haze from long use, both part of the honest age of the group.
Set together in an entry, along a wide windowsill or beside a console with tall branches, they bring scale, color and texture without feeling styled. New glass can be pretty. Old glass like this gives a room history and depth.
