This set of three antique French confit pots is a wonderful, graduated set of this style of pots. Each pot is a smaller version of the one beside it and all three still have their flat lids. Together, they have that wonderful look that feels collected and deeply connected to the French farmhouse kitchen.
These pots à graisse (grease pots), also known as saloirs, likely date from the late 19th to early 20th century. They were used in southwest France for storing duck confit, rillettes and rendered fat under a sealing layer. They were made to be working pantry jars that were used to preserve food through the season and keep the household supplied.
Each stoneware pot is salt-glazed in a warm tobacco brown with lids that sit well. These three are wonderful examples of this style of daily use pottery from the French countryside.
Today, they would be beautiful placed on a shelf or anchoring a corner in the kitchen somewhere. They are still useful today and could hold wooden spoons, garlic, herbs and more.
