The best part of this vintage French gratin dish set is that there are two. Same maker, same size, same beautiful glaze. One for potatoes, one for roasted vegetables... or both brought straight to the table for the kind of meal that feels simple, generous and very French.
These plats à gratin, or oval oven dishes, were made by La Bourguignonne in Marcigny, southern Burgundy, likely in the 1950s. Each base carries the shield mark with a small key inside, along with Made in France.
The interiors have a warm honey glaze, while the exteriors run deeper brown. The raw stoneware bases show darkening from real oven use, which is exactly the kind of real kitchen history I like to see. Useful, sturdy and full of French country table feeling.
