Found at a brocante in the South of France, this antique Italian pepper mill and salt shaker set carries the marks of a recognized 20th century Florentine maker. The pepper mill is a Stefano Ugolini Firenze piece, the macinapepe (pepper grinder) signed on a riveted oval brass plaque engraved 1784 over Firenze with two crossed swords. The 1784 is not the date of manufacture, but taken from one of the Stefano Ugolini hotels in Florence. The mill itself is mid 20th century Italian work in the maker's signature style.
The tall square column body of this vintage Italian pepper grinder has a hinged brass dome top that opens for filling. An iron crank drives the original steel mechanism, and a small wooden door on the front, with its brass knob, slides out to release the freshly ground pepper. It is substantial and beautifully made.
The companion piece is a turned wood Italian salt shaker on a stepped pedestal, capped with a perforated brass dome and finished with a teardrop finial. Its own brass plaque is engraved Sale in cursive script, and the underside is stamped Made in Italy.
The two pieces stand together on the table the way they were meant to. A matched set like this is hard to find, but will bring an amazing amount of charm to any table setting.
