Antique French Terracotta Pitcher | Pinched Pouring Lip | Mid to Late 19th Century
This antique French terracotta pitcher is a wonderful little country piece, hand thrown in the first half of the 19th century for simple everyday use. The pinched pouring lip was shaped by thumb rather than tool, the walls vary slightly in thickness, and the softly uneven silhouette tells you immediately it was made quickly by hand in a rural workshop.
No maker’s mark visible, which is exactly what you would expect on pottery like this.
The outside is left in warm unglazed red clay with small firing marks and the inside was coated in a matte brown glaze to help hold liquids. Little details, but they are what make old pottery like this so good.
This kind of French pichet en terre cuite (terracotta pitcher) sat on farmhouse tables holding water or wine for generations. Today it looks just as right on a kitchen shelf with dried lavender tucked inside or sitting on the counter chock full of utensils. Small early pieces with this much character are just lovely to have around.
