Antique French Gratin Dish | Glazed Earthenware | Early 20th Century
This antique French gratin dish is exactly the kind of old kitchen pottery I always end up bringing home from brocantes. Beautiful, useful and worn in all the right places. Likely dating to the early 20th century, the oval terre cuite émaillée (glazed earthenware) body carries the kind of simple provincial form French kitchens relied on for generations.
The inside is finished in a warm white glaze with beautiful age crazing throughout, while the outside carries a softly moulded ribbed band that gives the piece just enough detail without trying too hard. Around the foot, the exposed terracotta shows through with the kind of wear only decades of oven use can create.
This is the sort of dish that still begs to be cooked in. Potato gratin, roasted tomatoes, baked fruit in late summer... it still feels completely at home doing exactly what it was made for. Style it next to an old French cutting board or beside some antique copper and wood, it carries that relaxed French farmhouse kitchen feeling with it immediately.
