Antique French Cocotte | Alsace Glazed Earthenware | Klein Strasbourg, Early 20th Century
This antique French cocotte from Alsace carries both regional charm and a wonderful sense of provenance. Tucked inside the lid is the original paper label for Poterie d’Alsace Klein, once located at 7 Place du Marché Neuf in Strasbourg and operated by the Klein family until 1961.
The pottery itself was produced in Soufflenheim, the historic pottery village at the heart of Alsatian ceramic tradition, known for its richly glazed utilitarian earthenware throughout the early and mid 20th century.
The two tone glaze gives this small covered pot its particularly inviting character. The underside retains an embossed maker’s mark, while the survival of the original Strasbourg retailer label adds an especially appealing layer of history and authenticity.
Known in France as a cocotte (small covered cooking vessel), pieces like this were made for practical everyday use and still feel entirely at home in a kitchen today. Perfect for serving pâté de campagne, rillettes, soft butter, or coarse sel gris (grey sea salt), it also displays beautifully alongside stoneware and copper.
A charming example of Alsatian pottery that brings warmth, regional history, and quiet character into the home.
