This antique French copper dessert mold was made for turning out molded jellies and chilled puddings, which were a real treat at the time. A copper melon mold this size is the kind of piece any kitchen would welcome, and the dessert it turned out would have been the centerpiece of the meal.
The oval melon silhouette, with deep ribs running lengthwise, gives a clean sculptural finish to whatever is unmolded onto the plate. The interior is tinned and a small iron ring is riveted through the rim for hanging on the kitchen wall. Likely produced in France in the late 19th to early 20th century.
The moule à gelée (jelly mold) sits on a wide oval flange with stepped, scalloped corners that lift it gently off the surface. The exterior copper has been polished back to a warm honey glow, with small traces of green oxidation near the rivet that tell you exactly how old it is. It is a well-proportioned antique copper jelly mold.
The interior tells the longer story. The tin lining is worn from use, with darkened copper showing through and only patches of the original silvery tin still bright. That is patina you cannot recreate. Today this antique French melon mold lives best as a display piece, hung on a wall or set on an open shelf where the light can dance off of its surface.
