Antique French Demijohn | Dark Olive Hand-Blown Glass | Original Chain & Cork
This antique French demijohn is special because the original chain and cork are still with it. That is not something seen often. The iron chain wraps around the applied glass rim at the neck, with the old cork still held in place after all these years. It gives the whole bottle a wonderful cellar feeling, like it was pulled from a quiet corner where it had been waiting for decades.
This dame-jeanne (demijohn) likely dates from the early to mid 19th century. It was hand blown in France as serious utility glass, made for storing wine or other liquids in a cellar. The glass is a deep olive green that reads almost black until the light moves through it. Then the color opens up and you start to see the depth, bubbles and unevenness that make old hand-blown glass so beautiful.
Around the neck, the doubled glass ring was applied by hand, giving the iron chain something to grip. The walls are thick and slightly uneven, with small seed bubbles suspended throughout the glass. These are the details that separate early hand-blown French glass from later standardized production.
The shape has real presence. It stands tall and heavy, with a broad body that rises into a narrow neck. The original chain and cork add so much character because they connect the bottle directly to its working life in a French cellar.
Today, it would be beautiful standing on a stone floor, tucked into a kitchen corner, or placed on a console table to anchor the room. You could also mix it with other antique French wine bottles, cornichon or truffle jars.
The dark olive glass brings weight, age and atmosphere everywhere it goes.
