Large Vintage Pichon Uzès Basket | Hand-Woven Oval Ceramic | Provence Faience
The woven basket forms from Maison Pichon are some of the most recognizable pottery to come out of Uzès, and this one is a really lovely example. Signed B. Pichon Uzès and stamped fait main (handmade) underneath, it dates to the mid 20th century and carries all the warmth and craftsmanship the workshop became known for.
Maison Pichon has been producing ceramics in the South of France since 1802, and these braided baskets remain among their most sought after styles.
The body is built from hand rolled clay strands woven together to imitate real basketry, then finished with small applied flower rosettes around the rim and sides. The pale celadon grey glaze softens beautifully across the surface, settling a little deeper in the recesses and lifting lighter across the raised braid. The rare oval shape sits with distinction on a table or counter.
Fill it with lemons, pears, or nothing at all and it still works beautifully. Pieces like this have a relaxed elegance to them that feels very southern French, somewhere between country pottery and sculpture. A really good signed Pichon piece with wonderful texture and presence.
