Antique French Copper Cauldron | Hammered | Iron Bail Handle
This is a special antique French copper cauldron... and it's the craftsmanship from the coppersmith that makes it so. Specifically, the dovetailing is what separates this from other copper pots. Look closely at the images and you'll see that around the base there fine teeth where the coppersmith locked the seams together by hand. This pot was made by a master craftsman.
The chaudron has a hand hammered body with a thick rolled rim that wraps around an iron core for strength. A wrought iron handle is attached to the cauldron by two brass escutcheon plates. The proportions and craftsmanship set this copper pot at some point in the late 18th to early 19th century.
The shape tells you what this chaudron was for. Tall and narrow rather than wide and shallow, it hung over a hearth fire to heat water. Boiling water was an everyday job in a French country kitchen, for washing, food preparation and laundry. A small copper pot like this was the workhorse that did it. The base carries fire marks from years over the flame.
A copper pot of this age has a beautiful patina and marks from over two centuries of use. It's perfect on kitchen counter loaded with fresh apples. It's also the perfect size for next to the fireplace to hold kindling. Or, place it on sideboard with a beautiful potted plant.

We accept returns within 14 days of delivery in line with EU consumer law. Buyer covers return shipping and items must be returned in original condition. Refunds include the item price and original standard shipping.
