This vintage French Vallauris poêlon has the kind of honest Provençal kitchen feeling that makes old terracotta so easy to love. The amber-glazed interior, pale clay exterior and long hollow handle give it a simple working beauty, like something that came straight from a kitchen in the South of France.
A poêlon is a traditional French cooking pan, and this example was made in Vallauris, the celebrated pottery town in the Alpes-Maritimes. It carries two impressed marks: VALLAURIS A.M. and Ste Commerciale Vallauris A.M., a wonderful detail that ties it directly to a named Vallauris maker.
The underside shows dark heat patina from use, while the body carries firing marks, glaze drips and small age-related chips along the base rim. Display it on a shelf, hang it in a Provençal kitchen arrangement or fill it with garden cuttings. The maker marks, color and form make this a really special piece of Vallauris pottery.
