Antique French Baking Dish | Saint-Uze Revol | Late 19th Century
The wire hanger is what made me stop on this one. At some point in its life, someone knew this antique French gratin dish was precious enough to add wire across the back so it could hang on the wall. I love details like that because they tell me a big part of the story.
Made by Gustave Revol at Saint-Uze and marked Terre des Alpes on the underside, this substantial oval baking dish dates to roughly 1880–1910, when pottery like this moved seamlessly from oven to table and back again.
The shape is distinctive. Long and elegant, with molded shell handles at each end that feel almost architectural and very French. The caramel glaze has rich amber tones collectors look for in old terre vernissée (glazed terracotta).
Turn it over and the underside tells the rest of the story. Dark firing and cooking marks cover the base, evidence of years spent over heat. The high points of the shell handles have worn back to the red clay beneath, while light utensil marks cross the interior from generations of family meals.
What I like most is that this dish was clearly used for generations and then preserved for more with the wall hanging. I can promise that this dish doesn't want to be tucked away in a cupboard, but displayed where its inherent beauty can be enjoyed.
You can picture it hanging on a kitchen wall in the Drôme, waiting for the next gratin, roast chicken, or baked fruit tart. The Revol mark gives it provenance. The wear gives it personality. Together they tell an amazing story.
