Found at a brocante in the South of France, these antique French jaspé pitchers came out of the Drôme provençale, the stretch of country around Dieulefit where pottery has been part of daily life for generations. Likely dating from the late 19th to early 20th century, these two little pichets jaspés (marbled glaze pitchers) clearly spent a long life together in the same kitchen.
The shapes match beautifully: hand thrown bodies, pulled strap handles, and softly pinched pouring lips. Both are finished in green copper glaze over a pale cream slip on terracotta clay, but each one carries the glaze differently. One has a softer mottled jaspé finish, while the other shows stronger green banding wrapping around the body. That difference is exactly what makes the pair interesting together.
Set them on a shelf beside stacked plates or use them with flowers from the garden and they immediately bring warmth into the room. The glaze is really what gets you on these. Every drip and worn edge feels completely like it is the result of generations of use. A fantastic pair of old French country pitchers with real personality still intact.
