Antique French Toupin | Earthenware | Two Handle Cooking Pot
Found at a brocante in the South of France, this antique French earthenware pot is a small piece of country pottery with real personality. The body is round and softly bellied, narrowing into a neat collar at the neck and finishing in a slightly flared rim. Two flat strap handles sit on the shoulder making the iconic shape everyone loves... this is the kind of detail a good country potter could not resist.
Likely circa 1880 to 1940, it could be a storage pot or a "toupin" that had never been used on the fire.
The interior is a deep iron brown glaze, glossy and dark, that has run over the rim in places and dripped a short way down the warm bare clay outside. That contrast between the dark inside and the soft sandy exterior is what makes a small antique French kitchen pot like this one come alive on a shelf or counter.
There is visible wear here, including a small chip near one handle base, a few firing irregularities, and gentle abrasion aged naturally over decades of use. After a long working life in a French country kitchen, it is still ready to serve. This antique French earthenware pot earns its place in any home that loves the look of Provence.
Works perfectly as a utensil jar next to the stove or it can be filled with fresh or dried flowers.
