Antique French Passoire | Tinned Sheet Iron | Pierced Rosette Base
There is something especially satisfying about a kitchen object that was made with care even though it was built for work. This antique French passoire, likely dating to the 19th century, was formed in tinned sheet metal and finished with a beautifully hand-punched base. The pierced rosette pattern is what gives it its presence, a dense geometric arrangement of dots and small cut openings radiating from the center like a small sunburst.
The construction is straightforward and beautiful. The body was rolled and soldered by hand, the rim turned for strength, and the lower flared foot added separately to lift the pierced base clear of the surface below. Two side handles make it easy to carry, and the whole piece has aged into the soft grey, pewter and warm rust-brown tones that only long use can create. Much of the original tinning has worn back over time, leaving behind delightful character.
This old French strainer earns its place in any country kitchen easily. It looks wonderful on a shelf, hung on the wall where the punched pattern can catch the light or set out holding fruit on the counter. Pieces like this bring a quiet, authentic kitchen feeling that cannot be manufactured. A 19th century passoire with this kind of handwork and this much character is a lovely thing to come across and even better to have in your kitchen.
