Antique French Copper Measure Set | Set of 5 Mesures | Late 19th
This antique French copper measure set caught my attention because all five pieces have stayed together. That is not something you see every day. Each measure has its own volume plaque, its own tall brass handle, and the same warm working patina across the copper. Together, they feel like they came straight from an old épicerie, dairy, oil merchant, or country kitchen where measuring and pouring were part of the daily life.
There is something especially satisfying about a graduated set like this. The five copper measures are marked 1L, 0.75L, 0.5L, 0.25L, and 0.1L. They were practical tools first, but lined up together, they have that collected French kitchen feeling that is hard to recreate with newer pieces.
These antique French mesures à liquide likely date from the late 19th to early 20th century. Each one is made in copper with a hand-tinned interior, an oval brass volume plaque riveted to the body and a tall plain brass strap handle hooked at the top. That hooked handle is an important detail. It allowed the measure to rest on the rim of a larger cask, jar, or reservoir, freeing the hand while liquid was portioned out. Surprising, but these were not "dipped" into the liquid.
The age is visible in the best way. The copper has deepened into warm tones, with soft pink undertones where the metal has been handled over time. They have the kind of working character that feels good to be around.
Today, they would be beautiful hanging in a row from a pot rack over the stove, lined up down the counter, or gathered together with other French copper. They could also hold herbs, wooden spoons, small flowers, or kitchen tools. As a complete set, they bring a sense of history to a room... the kind of detail that makes a kitchen feel slowly collected over time.
