Antique French Pot à Graisse | Glazed Terracotta | Original Merchant Tag
This antique French pot à graisse (grease pot) grabbed me immediately because the original paper merchant tag is still tied to the handle. That almost never happens.
The tag references Saint Laurent les Macon and still carries a handwritten price list on the back for cire apprêtée (prepared wax) sold by weight. Somehow, both the pot and its little piece of history managed to stay together for more than a century.
The pot itself is exactly the kind of country pottery I love most. Small, useful, and completely amazing. Hand thrown in terracotta with a softly tapered body, two little applied button handles, and a dark olive brown glaze worn back naturally in places to the warm clay underneath. Inside, the glaze shifts lighter to a creamy yellow tone, while the rim still carries traces of old kitchen use and handling.
This is the sort of object that does not need styling tricks to feel special. Set it on a shelf beside old wood and copper or leave it exactly as it is with the tag hanging from the handle. The whole thing carries history. A small everyday piece that somehow managed to bring its story along with it.
