Antique French Brass Candlesticks | Pair | Régence Period c. 1720 to 1740
The fact that these two candlesticks have stayed together for roughly three centuries made them stand out. It sounds simple enough that this set exists, but it is actually remarkable. Pairs get separated. One breaks, one gets lost, one ends up in a different household. Somehow these did not.
Both retain the same stepped octagonal bases, the same faceted baluster stems, and the same removable octagonal bobeches, all consistent with French Régence brasswork from the first half of the 18th century. These are dated likely around 1720 to 1740.
The craftsmanship is exceptional. Each candlestick was constructed in multiple parts, with the stem formed from two sections carefully joined and finished so skillfully that the seam is difficult to find without searching for it. The faceted surfaces catch the light differently from every angle, creating far more movement than a simple turned candlestick ever could.
Turn one over and centuries reveal themselves in the deep oxidation hidden inside the recesses, untouched by polishing and protected from handling. The brass itself has mellowed into the rich golden tone that only age can produce.
What is so enjoyable about a pair like this is imagining everything they have witnessed. Revolutions, empires, generations of families, and countless evenings illuminated by candlelight.
Today they still do exactly what they were designed to do. Place them on a mantel, a library shelf, or a dining table with a pair of beeswax tapers and the room changes immediately. Not because they are ornate or imposing, but because they have that grounded history that only something that has already survived three hundred years can have. The craftsmanship is impressive. The survival of the pair may be even more so.
