Antique French Cutting Board | Paddle Handle | Late 19th Century
This antique French cutting board has the kind of dark, worn surface that tells you it was used for real kitchen work. The shape is classic and straightforward. It has a rectangular cutting surface, softly rounded shoulders and a tall paddle handle pierced for hanging. It feels practical first, but the deep brown patina and leather lanyard give it a lot of farmhouse character.
This planche à découper ancienne (old cutting board) likely dates from the late 19th to early 20th century, consistent with French country kitchen boards of the period. The wood appears to be a dense hardwood, likely beech, with golden undertones showing through where the surface has been worn by long handling. A leather lanyard was added at some point along the way, making it easy to hang in the kitchen or on a wall.
The surface of the board tells the real story. Cross-hatched knife marks run across both sides, deepest through the middle where generations of cooks would have worked. The surface may have been stained at some time... the wear that comes through from chopping, slicing and washing are apparent.
The hanging hole at the top of the handle is a small but important detail. It tells you this board was not just stored away. It likely hung in a kitchen, used when needed and then right back on the wall. That daily use is exactly what gives old French cutting boards their warmth.
Today, it could hang with other antique French cutting boards, sit on the counter with a loaf of bread and an old knife... or be used as a charcuterie board when friends are gathered around the table. The dark wood would look beautiful with linen torchons, copper, pottery and a quick glass of rosé at lunch.
