Antique French Copper Saucepan | Pierre Vergnes Durfort | Mid 20th Century
This antique French copper saucepan was made by Pierre Vergnes in Durfort, a small village in the Tarn known for its long history of copper craft. The Vergnes workshop opened in 1950 and still produces professional grade tinned copperware in the same way it always has. This casserole en cuivre is signed in clear script just below the handle, with a thickness and weight that tells you immediately it was built for a working kitchen.
The body is heavy gauge copper with a long forged iron handle riveted to the side using three large copper rivets. The fitted copper lid sits squarely on the rim and carries its own forged iron loop handle. The interior tinning has worn through over decades of cooking, leaving exposed copper across most of the base and lower walls. The exterior has aged into a warm, mellow patina that is impossible to fake.
This is a piece with a working life behind it. Pierre Vergnes pots passed through serious French kitchens for a reason, and this antique French copper pot has clearly earned its keep. Set it on a shelf above the stove with the lid on, hang it from a pot rack, or fill it with bunches of dried herbs on the counter as a pinch pot. A signed Vergnes piece in this condition is a great find.
