Vintage French Wrought Iron Pot Rack | Rooster Motif Ceiling Hanger | French Country Kitchen
This vintage French wrought iron pot rack has the kind of rustic kitchen presence that immediately brings a room closer to the French countryside. The oval shape, twisted wrought iron hooks and rooster silhouettes all work together beautifully. Especially with the deep rust-brown patina that has settled over the iron.
Known in France as a porte-casseroles, this ceiling-hung pot rack likely dates from the early to mid 20th century. It was made to hang above a kitchen table, island or working area so pots, pans and utensils could stay close at hand. The frame is oval, with a series of hand-bent hooks around the lower band and a central suspension hook at the top for hanging from a chain.
The rooster motif gives the piece its French country character. The coq, or rooster, appears often in French rural decoration. Here, it feels right at home. The details are charming without being too polished.
One of the rooster cut-outs has broken away over time, which is visible and part of the condition of the piece.
Today, it would be wonderful hanging in a French country kitchen with copper pots, dried herbs, utensils or even a few small baskets below. It could also be used decoratively in a pantry, garden room or covered terrace. Proper ceiling installation would be needed if used for hanging cookware.
Please Note: the chain is for studio use only and is not included with this piece.
